The Closing Charge - Walking Stick

This custom-made walking stick has the Blue Lodge Closing Charge, in it's entirety, wood-burned down the length of the stick. Incorporating a rising/setting sun motif in the design, as well as the square and compass, and other Masonic designs near the top. This popular stick has a touch of wood stain and a clear finish on it.

"We are now about to quit this sacred retreat of friendship and virtue, to mix again with the world. Amidst its concerns and employments, forget not the duties which you have heard so frequently inculcated, and so forcibly recommended, in this Lodge. Be diligent, prudent, temperate, discreet. Remember that, around this altar, you have promised to befriend and relieve every brother who shall need your assistance. You have promised, in the most friendly manner, to remind him of his errors, and aid a reformation. These generous principles are to extend further. Every human being has a claim upon your kind offices. Do good unto all. Recommend it more especially “to the house-hold of the faithful.” Finally, brethren, be ye all of one mind; live in peace; and may the God of love and peace delight to dwell with and bless you." So Mote It Be.

George Washington walkingstick, Freemason

The George Washington Masonic Walkingstick was made in 2004, is in perfect condition, and stands over five feet tall.

The design consists of two patterns down the length of the stick, each with a different design, both painted in red and blue (the stick itself is white aspen). The design and lettering is woodburned, the paint is acrylic, and a polyurethane finish is applied.

There are two quotations on the stick. The first is by George Washington, a Freemason: "Government is not reason, It is not eloquence. It is force; like a fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action."

The second bit of verse states: "George Washington was born in 1732. At the 2nd Continental Congress, he was elected Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. In 1781 with the help of the French, he forced the British to surrender. On April 30th 1789, Washington became the first President of the United States."

Masonic Walking Stick: Unpainted

I haven't started painting yet, but here are some pictures of my personal Masonic Walking Stick. I'll post final pictures when its done. See post below this one for the quotes on the stick. I tried to get close enough so you could see the Entered, Passed, and Raised burn with the corresponding dates!

Entered - 9/30/2010 - The Common Gavel is an instrument made use of by operative masons to break off the corners of rough stones, the better to fit them for the builder's use; but we, as Free and Accepted Masons, are taught to make use of it for the more noble and glorious purpose of divesting our hearts and consciences of all the vices and superfluities of life; thereby fitting our minds, as living stones, for that spiritual building—that house not made with hands—eternal in the heavens.

Passed - 2/24/2011 - The Plumb is an instrument made use of by operative Masons to raise perpendiculars, the square to square their work, and the level to lay horizontals, but we, as Free and Accepted Masons, are taught to use them for a more noble and glorious purpose; the plumb teaches us to walk uprightly in our several stations before God and man, squaring our actions by the square of virtue, and remembering that we are traveling on the level of time to that undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler has returned.

Raised - 6/25/2011 - The Trowel is an instrument made use of by operative masons to spread the cement which unites a building into one mass, but we, as Free and Accepted Masons, are taught to make use of it for the more noble and glorious purpose of spreading the cement of brotherly love and affection; that cement which unites us into one sacred band or society of friends and brothers, among whom no contention should ever exist but that noble contention, or, rather, emulation, of who can best work or best agree.

Progress on Masonic Walking stick

Well, sometimes you start a project and it evolves while you are doing it. My first inclination was to make a Scottish Rite Walking Stick / Cane, but in the end I made a walking stick for myself, as an example of what can be done! I have just completed the burns on it, and I will post pictures soon!

The stick has a rising sun motif in the design work, a central column for a quote, and three smaller columns for other quotes.

I have decided to put the following quotes on the stick

Central Quote
"We are now about to quit this sacred retreat of friendship and virtue, to mix again with the world. Amidst its concerns and employments, forget not the duties which you have heard so frequently inculcated, and so forcibly recommended, in this Lodge. Be diligent, prudent, temperate, discreet. Remember that, around this altar, you have promised to befriend and relieve every brother..."

The Smaller Quotes surrounding the design work read:

I am still working on the top of the walkingstick, as I would like to put my name, Mount Hermon Lodge, and perhaps So Mote It Be, somewhere on the stick. Stay tuned to this page for pictures soon!

New Masonic Walkingstick!

I have done the preliminary burns on a new Masonic walking stick. There are so many wonderful options when trying to decide what to put on a walking stick for a Freemason, but I have decided to make one specific to Scottish Rite Masonry first.

My hope is to develop several prototypes for folks to see!

For example, I'd like to have the following example sticks ready by January 1, 2012.

1. Scottish Rite Walking stick
2. York Rite Walking stick
3. Scottish Rite/York Rite combined
4. Freemason Walking stick

Each of these sticks would contain the dates and places where an individual was entered, passed, and raised; as well as further information relative to the particular path - Scottish or York Rite or both.

For example, the a Scottish Rite walking stick would also contain the degree's and titles for the 4-32 degrees, as well as a quote.

A York Rite walking stick would also contain the degree's and titles for the titles and degree work from its work.

For those who have done York and Scottish Rite, your walking stick would contain all of that information regarding titles and degrees, plus your entered, passed, and raised information.

I hope these will truly be heirloom quality, Masonic walking sticks that your families will proudly pass down from generation to generation when you enter "that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."

Thank you for stopping by!
